Arlington, Va., June 26, 2017 – Later this year, the Office of Management and Budget will issue far reaching project management standards, policies, and guidelines for 16 federal agencies. To help the agency leaders prepare, Eagle Hill Consulting has released a new infographic, At-A-Glance:  Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act, outlining the agencies impacted, the timeline and what agencies can do now to prepare.

“The Project Management Improvement and Accountability Act (PMIAA) has the potential to change and improve the way nearly every agency operates,” says Melissa Jezior, Eagle Hill Consulting president and chief executive officer.

“Agencies that are taking steps now to prepare will be best positioned to comply with the PMIAA and improve their agency’s ef­ficiency while better managing costs and schedules for high profile federal agency projects. Change of this scale can be difficult and doesn’t happen overnight, especially for large bureaucracies. But, there are questions that agency leaders can ask today and actions that can be taken now to prepare for large-scale change under PMIAA,” Jezior explained.

Enacted in 2016, PMIAA’s goal is to improve federal program management practices and bolster workforce development while strengthening accountability and best practices in project and program management throughout the federal government. According to the Project Management Institute (PMI), PMIAA will reform federal program management policy in four ways:

  • Creating a formal job series and career path for program managers in the federal government;
  • Developing a standards-based program management policy across the federal government;
  • Recognizing the essential role of executive sponsorship and engagement by designating a senior executive in federal agencies to be responsible for program management policy and strategy; and
  • Sharing knowledge of successful approaches to program management through an interagency council on program management.

PMI’s Pulse of the Profession report found that that only 64 percent of government strategic initiatives ever meet their goals and business intent — and that government entities waste $101 million for every $1 billion spent on projects and programs.
